We spent a relaxing week here. Mostly because there are several fun things to do that appeal to adults and kids here and everyone was interested and content. We did an escape room at Le Donjon de Rouen and got to use Oculus Quest VR goggles. We visited St. Joan of Arc’s Church, as well as the Historial Jeanne d’Arc, which is a reenactment of the second (posthumous) trial.
We explored parks, playgrounds, cemeteries, and medieval streets. We enjoyed our tiny apartment when we were in it, but as the weather was nearly perfect, that wasn’t much. I already want to come back and I haven’t left yet.
We also went to the light show that the city provides free every summer. It is displayed on the front of the Rouen Cathedral and is the most incredible display of it’s kind that I have ever seen. We saw it 3 times while we were here and I only wish we had started on the first night we were in town so we could have seen it six times.
Rouen is easily one of the most memorable cities that I have ever seen. When we look back on this trip and some things already run together and we’ll ask each other if a certain site was in Peterborough or Coventry? Plymouth or Portsmouth? That will not happen with Rouen. The architecture alone is too memorable.
Had we went on and seen other cities with street after street of timber framed homes from the 14th and 15th century, maybe we might’ve confused it with someplace else, but I really think Rouen is special and we will remember it always.
